Dear Members and Lurkers of the Black Dahlia Message Board,

I am conducting research in virtual communities in true crime. I have selected the Black Dahlia Message Board for inclusion in my study. I am asking for your help.

I have created a survey of user interest and satisfaction with the Black Dahlia Message Board. It will take about 10 minutes of your time to complete.

This is an anonymous survey and no names or contact information is being collected.

The survey is available from now until August 19th at 11:30 pm.

I will be happy to post the results of my research once it is completed. The results will be published in a journal devoted to true crime cases.

I am the editor and publisher of The Hatchet: Lizzie Borden's Journal of Murder, Mystery & Victorian History at http://lizzieandrewborden.com/HatchetOnline/index.htm

I hold a Ph.D. in Theatre History and Dramatic Criticism from Penn State.

I am working on some research about virtual communities in true crime, and came up with idea to survey members. I wrote the administrator of this message board on the 11th and joined then, requesting an interview with them for my research.

I haven't heard back yet, but hopefully will soon.

I am not doing market research. I am a serious student of true crime myself and am surveying my own forum members too over at The Lizzie Borden Society Forum at http://lizzieandrewborden.com/LBForum/index.php

I am also surveying several other forums devoted to true crime. If you take a gander at my questions, it is just about your feelings about being a community of like-minded folks and what that means to you personally. The demographics part of the survey are for use in possible analysis, but I have no preconceived idea about the outcomes here. Perhaps there are more women than men, or perhaps more women reply to the survey than men. I realize statistics are a funny thing, but I do have some experience with them too.

I hope you are calmed by my answer. I think your concern and suspicion is well-founded, considering the world we live in.

I have asked several other true crime forums to help me with my research, and they have all participated. Except this one. I wish I could have your views on your experience with the Black Dahlia Message Board. It would round out the study quite nicely. But so far, none of you have taken the survey.

Well, to be fair the board is only down to a handful of active members, and was subject to a lot of pointless "board drama".

Well that story is very important to tell. You don't have to go into enormous detail, but the questions I pose are about exactly that sort of board life. Please share on the survey. You do not have to name names or be specific.
